hmmm

okay so i think ive decided againt this pattern idea, i think that its been over done by so many people, not only this but i feel its a little bit of a half assed idea, it doesnt inspire me at all and i want to undertake something perhaps more personal to me or at least something i will enjoy doing and that may benift my photography portfolio, i think boring images of pattern are somthing that would not catch anyones eye!

I have been thinking very hard about various idea's and have come up with one much more personal to me as a child i moved around a lot and i have realised i lived in 15 differnt houses i am thinking of documenting not only the houses i lived in but also places that as a child and a teenager meant alot to me or were a big part of my life, places that i used to hang out and places of particular interest im not sure how well this project may work as taking images of houses etc may not be visually appealing, i would probably shoot in black and white not only to maybe make it look more intersting but also to add the theme of age behind the images, perhaps even adding colour the more recent the houses get (i know im not that old but i just think its a cool touch!)

 More varying patterns, i likes all the different shapes and textures in this image, i also like the composition, the natural light worked to my advantage in this image because it seems to just be illuminating the flowers which make them become the main focus of the image but i really like the line of the bench in the background and then the comparison of the intricate detail in the leaves and flowers!

I have been out to take some pictures of various curves and lines in the urban landscape as a starting point to perhaps give me some more idea's here are some examples.

Testing using 50mm canon lens to add a more surreal and interesting look!

 Its great having the wheel on Plymouth hoe! a perfect object to represent not on straight lines but curves as well!

 I think i prefer the black and white images! because the sky was mostly clear that day, the black and white makes the sky look very dramatic in a dark Grey tone, which has almost made the images look like they have been shot on film using a polarizer an filters to bring it out however they were just shot digitally!

 Dramatic clouds make the image really stand out!

 Straight lines

Small blades of grass creating small patterns and lines in the grass where it has been cut, i think this images would of benefited from me using a different lens because the depth of field is to shallow for this picture.

 These black and white images really show off the sky! Again making the images look like they have been shot on film!

 More close up line shapes

 Individual pattern mixed with a long sweeping curve drawing the eye all over the image much like some of the images i looked at for inspiration!

This was one of my favorite images from the sets! i like the block line of the edge of the wall and then the bright colour contrast aswell as pattern with the leaves, i also like the distorted reflection of the wall leading you through the images and also providing and extra dimention with more patterns in the image!

Previous work.

I had a look through some of my own work to see if i could draw some influence from things i have done previously!

Shot in Exeter in 2007- straight and cruved, not only the lines on the bench but also focussing on the water droplets that give another dimention to the image!

 Shot in Exeter in 2007- using the difference between straight and curved! it makes for an interesting images as the lines that lead you into the image are not only leading you in towards the back, but also across the image which i think  makes the viewer look at whole images as the eye is drawn all over the place!

 An image using glow sticks, perhaps looking at patterns made with light rather than in the landscape, but maybe this has been over done...

Mushrooms that i found around a year ago up at hemmerdon mine in Plympton, i really like this image and i would defonantly say that it links to the project, the image contains not only detailed patterns in the lines on the mushroom and the intricate detail in pattern on the log it is growing on but also the over all shape in the image!

Back to the drawing board!

I have been looking at some photographers who focus on patterns and shapes, i have struggled to find many that have inspired me but here are some examples of a few that might influence this idea-


JSB photography-

 I like the striking colours in this image the very highly saturated blue and green next to each other make this image really stand out, perhaps it was shot with a polarizing filter? i think if i chose this idea i will use a polarizer filter as it may make the images stand out more as the subject its self could be hard to make interesting just by shooting basic images i think i will also have to edit the images to give them something more than just standard pattern photography which is something that some might say has been done to death!

 I like the contast of the curves and the strait lines in this and i may look into using curves and strait lines in the landscape rather than using the close up detail pattern which again is something that has been done alot i would prefer to shoot things from further away to perhaps get in more of the lines and curves!

 Again in this image i like the contrast between the straight and curved shapes, i also really like the composition of this image!

Like the previous image this one uses straight and curved shapes to add contrast, i think this is much more dramatic than using one type of shape!





Adrienne Adam-
Adam's add's focus more to the close up detail and intericusy of differnt patterns in many things like flowers, veins in leaves and patterns in wood work.

 I like the way in this image although it contails 2 different items the pattern from the stick in the foreground flows and joins up to the wider stick in the bacground almost as if it is one subject rather than two! in a way it almost gives the image a 3D effect!

 This image reminds me of something Ansel Adams may have produced the intricate lines and high contrast really give it the same kind of look to one of his images, although ansel adams focused on the broader landcape rather than its detail i can defonantly see the influence here!

In this image like some of JSB's work i like the contrasting patterns the soft smoothness of the leaves them selves and then the tough sharp outline, i think in a way it almost gives the image a sinister look almost as if it is telling the veiwer not to get to close!

I really like this image i came across it looking through the Tashen book "20th century photography"

Something cheaper?

I then thought that working on my holga for this project would be out of my price range because of the cost of both film and development! i went on to ebay and managed to pick up an old film slr a Canon600 howver when the camera arrived it came with no manual and i seem un able to find much on the internet about this camera, not only this but the seller promised to send me a battery and did'nt so i had to order from and ebay seller in europe just to get the battery! when i began to scroll the internet i couldnt seem to find anything about how to work this camera and since film wise i am not familiar with to many film camera's other than a pentax k1000 and a praktica LTL3 i couldnt really figure this one out myself! i tryed to experiment with it however the film came out blank so either the camera is broken or i did something very wrong... i have left this camera to sit on my shelf until i can figure it out!

Experimenting with double exposures!

I also experimented with double exposures! whislt taking the images i thought about mixing 2 themes in particular life and death.. however it was something i didnt want to continue with as i wasnt sure how i could carry on mixing these two things without the project perhaps becoming a little to morbid and as it was a summer project i felt it should have a had a little but more of a happy summery theme! here are some of the double exposures i shot!

 I think this image is my favorite it is more not winding on the film enough than a double exposure but i like it a lot!

Idea 1

I began to shoot on film as this is something i dont do very often! i brought myself a holga (only had a small budget over summer) and shot a colour and black and white roll of film, i didnt have much of an idea it was mainly shooting a bit of everything just to get me used to shooting film, here are some of the things i shot! these images where shot whilst visiting my mums house over the summer-

(The old pig shed)This one reminded me of an old Horror film really liked this one!

I also began just to mess around to look at my phone camera and different app's avaliable, by no means am i saying this is photography i just wanted to look at the comparision and how it can scarily be almost matched with modern technology!

Looking at these images i think it is almost hard to tell the difference between what was shot on a holga and what was shot on my phone! Perhaps the only clear visual differnce is that the images shot on my phone are much crisper and less grainy, but the grain is what i love about holga's so there is no way a mobile phone could replace my trusty piece of plastic! for this project because it is over summer my budget is only going to be very small so far getting 2 rolls of film developed and buying the film it has cost me over £20 so if i am going to continue to shoot on a holga im going to have to get myself a job...
